The fellows will work within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network DiXiT (http://dixit.uni-koeln.de/) involved in the creation and publication of digital scholarly editions. Huygens ING and the DiXiT Network will encourage and assist the research fellow in rounding off the research period with a PhD dissertation.

Huygens ING has vacancies for:

1. Research Fellow (Early Stage Researcher) TEI and web-based editing tools
38 hours a week (1.0 fte)

The research project investigates the field of transcription and editing tools. Given on the one hand the availability of a mature and highly sophisticated infrastructure for digital editing spearheaded by the TEI consortium, and on the other hand the blossoming of web-based transcription and crowd sourcing tools, the objectives of the research project are: (i) to describe the respective strengths of both approaches; (ii) to effect an Integration of web-based tools and the TEI ecosystem to enable collaborative, accessible and standards-based editing, and (iii) to facilitate within either approach the accessible and standards-based semantic annotation of digital content.
Subtasks include: (I) develop an inventory and critical assessment of web-based tools and comparison of web-based editing vs. XML-native solutions; (II) devote special attention to the issue of capturing textual variation in either paradigm; (III) define a suitable TEI-compatible standoff mark-up format for exchange between TEI and web-based environments; (IV) investigate the potential of semantic enrichment of XML digital contents (in collaboration with Net7)
The research project includes two secondments in Italy :
• Rome, 6 months: Research on tagless editing and data models designed to capture textual variation
• Pisa, 3 months: Insight into the development of generic publication frameworks and semantic annotation tools

Position requirements
· Master in in a humanities field (e.g. Literary Studies, History) and proven affinity with information technology, or an information science Master with proven affinity with the humanities
· Basic programming skills; knowledge of XML technology is a bonus
· Preferably some experience in (digital) editing of historical or literary sources
· Fluent in English
· Some knowledge of Dutch is an advantage but not a requirement; learning Dutch is encouraged
· Willing to reach out to and collaborate with national and international colleagues in related research disciplines

Appointment and Salary
The appointment will be for a total of 3 years, starting at the 1st of April 2014. The first appointment will be for 12 months. Upon positive evaluation, it will be extended with another 24 months (full-time). The gross salary is based on EU guidelines for Marie Curie Initial Training Networks and will be € 25.333 per year, based on a full-time appointment, excluding 8% holiday pay and a 8,3% year-end bonus.

2. Research Fellow (Early Stage Researcher) Long-term business models in dissemination and publishing
38 hours a week (1.0 fte)

Methods to be applied: Literature research case studies, surveys, experiments, user studies.
Aspects to be explored: viable policies for longer term valorisation and revenue; open access, exploitation and maintenance costs of digital editions; paper derivatives, event association, apps, ‘gamification’, e-learning, augmented reality knowledge aids, lite vs. full licensing, subscription etc. (in collaboration with AUP, OBP, Liguori)
The research project includes secondments in Italy and the UK:
• Naples, 4 months: Study the experiences of business models for digital resources developed
• London, 4 months: Revenues and costing and sustainability of digital endeavors

Position requirements
· Master in a humanities field (e.g. Literary Studies, History) and an active interest in digital publication
· Affinity with business administration
· Affinity with information technology
· Fluent in English
